Minister Angie Motshekga hands over 100th ASIDI school

Handover of Dorrington Matsepe Primary School marks significant milestone as ASIDI delivers 100th school

The Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga will hand over Dorrington Matsepe Primary School in Kroonstad, the 100th ASIDI school to be completed, the vision of providing conducive teaching and learning conditions for our teachers and learners remains imperative. Aiming at building a total of 527 brand new schools, ASIDI stands as the most ambitious of departmental programmes and is changing the face of school infrastructure in South Africa forever.

Dorrington Matsepe Primary School was established in 1992 with 500 pupils and 15 educators. Current enrolment stands at 1 100 pupils, large numbers of whom are from Troubou township nearby.

ASIDI is however not only a story of brick and mortar, nor is it about beautiful paving and luscious lawns, ASIDI is government delivering on the dividend of democracy. ASIDI is a story about a brighter future for the children of this nation, as the future belongs to them. Government is working to creating an enabling environment for them to excel. In doing this, the country is moving towards shaping future leaders and creating a skilled workforce that will contribute to economic growth.

In the Eastern Cape alone, 84 schools have been completed to replace mud schools. In the Western Cape, the department has completed 11 schools. Four each have been completed in the Free State, two in Limpopo and one in the Northern Cape.

All ASIDI schools come standard with specialist classrooms such as science and computer labs, nutrition and Grade R centres, libraries and administration blocks complete with dedicated staff room, principal’s offices, sick bay and reception.

A handover is an important symbolic and significant gesture during which communities can celebrate a return to dignity in education for rural and under privileged areas.
