Minister Bathabile Dlamini briefs media on progress made in dealing with fraud and corruption, 29 Mar

The Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini, together with the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Ms Virginia Petersen, will brief the media on progress made in dealing with fraud and corruption within the social sector.

The media briefing will take place a day before the start of the second national SASSA Anti-Corruption Conference to take place in Pretoria from 30 to 31 March.

Government has since 2009 taken a strong stance in the fight against fraud and corruption, especially as it relates to procurement and tender processes, social grants, IDs, etc.

Since the first Annual Anti-Corruption Conference in November 2013, a total of 160 arrests were made comprising of SASSA officials, CPS officials, beneficiaries and illegal money lenders.

Minister Dlamini will therefore detail how the social sector has performed over the past few years to root out fraud and corruption within its area of responsibility and how these efforts will be accelerated going forward.

The press briefing will also enable media to gain an understanding of how the forth coming Anti-Corruption Conference will impact on reducing the amount of fraud and corruption that exists within the social sector.
