MEC Helen Sauls-August outlines plans to revamp old building in Port Elizabeth, 19 May

MEC to outline plans to revamp Steve Biko Building

Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Helen Sauls-August and Qhama Social Housing Institution will outline the plans to revamp the old Sanlam building tomorrow in a ceremony to be attended by former detainees, families and government entities.

This will include the total investment of various stakeholders into the project, number of social units, preserving the heritage aspect of the building and time frames to complete the project.

The ceremony will be attended by the former detainees, families and relatives of those who died in the building during apartheid years.  Today, the department and the social housing institution (Qhama) concluded the cleansing and blessing ceremony of the building with former detainees.

The MEC announced last year that the department would convert the notorious erstwhile Apartheid State Security Branch offices in Nelson Mandela Metro into a thriving social and rental housing project.

The ceremony will also include site handover to the contractor so that it can proceed with the refurbishment of the building.

The media is invited to capture the ceremony to be held as follows:

Date: 19 May 2017
Venue: Old Sanlam Building, Corner of Strand Street and Rodney Street (Port Elizabeth)
