MEC Refilwe Mtshweni on local government elections

MEC Mtshweni applauds voters for their participation during the 2016 local government elections

MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in Mpumalanga, Ms Refilwe Mtshweni has lauded eligible voters for their participation in the 2016 Local Government elections. Ms Mtshweni says the fourth Local Government elections since 1994 presented another opportunity for voters to elect represantatives of their choice to represent their aspirations in their local municipalities.

“By casting their votes, our communities in Mpumalanga and elsewhere in the country have not only exersized their democratic right as enshrined in the Constitution, but have also expressed their will about who do they want to repredsent them,” Ms Mtshweni  said.

She expressed the department’s support for the elected councillors in all the municipalities in Mpumalanga as a measure for the effective delivery of services. “Municipalities are at the coal face of service delivery due to their strategic location.

We will work jointly with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) to implement an induction programme that will ensure a smooth transition into the new dispensation and the uninterrupted delivery of basic services to our communities.

This programme and other forms of support serve as our determination to build a strong pillar for the 20 municipalities to achieve the service delivery goals set out in the 2030 National Development Plan (NDP),” she added.

Ms Mtshweni appealed to communities to work co-operatively with the new councils by participating in ward committee meetings and the provincial service delivery model, Operation Vuka Sisebente (OVS), aimed at addressing service delivery challenges.
