MEC Faith Mazibuko marks International Mother Tongue Day, 21 Feb

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko will, together with the Gauteng Provincial Language Committee, visit the Central Methodist Church in the Johannesburg CBD this coming Sunday as part of the International Mother Tongue Day celebrations.

The day is observed annually throughout the world on February 21, a date proclaimed by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is aimed at celebrating and promoting multilingualism, linguistic and cultural diversity in the world. This year’s theme is “My Language, my Culture”.

The church celebration will form part of the service starting at 10am where the MEC will have an opportunity to address the congregation after the sermon. The Central Methodist branch is one of the multilingual entities offering services in different languages for its various audiences, which is important towards the preservation of indigenous cultures and knowledge of the people.
