MEC Belinda Scott donates modern containers, laptops and engages citizens on saving money during festive season
A poverty-fighting NPO in KwaNyuswa area, Yenzanathi Community Upliftment Project, yesterday became the proud beneficiary of two moveable modern containers to help them sustain poverty eradication through the supply of cooked soup and vegetables to poor families.
The moveable offices had been requested by Yenzanathi from MEC for Finance in KwaZulu-Natal, Belinda Scott during her visit to the area last year. The request was prompted by lack of space to prepare and store food.
Lydia Hlophe, Manager of Yenzanathi, said the donation by MEC Scott was a much-needed space that will help them to deal with the bigger numbers of poor people requiring food support in KwaNyuswa area.
“Our area has a lot of poor people and unemployed youth. We wanted to make a difference by donating cooked soup and vegetables. When we started, we did not have enough space to satisfy the growing demand for food as well as space for our internet café project that helps the unemployed youth to search the internet for jobs.
We then asked Belinda to help us get a bigger space. We are grateful for this support,” she said.
Scott proceeded to the nearby taxi rank at the new Watercrest Mall to preach the message of saving to the residents of Molweni, KwaNyuswa, eMbo and the surrounding areas.
“During the December period, people easily forget that life continues in the months that follow. Most people have received their stokvel payouts and bonuses. They suddenly feel the urge to spend all of it. We are here to say NO to that habit.
We are not a saving nation, but we can change that now. It is not too late. A better life in 2017 can start with how you use the money you have now, “she said.
Since Scott launched the Savings Campaign in July, she has been interacting with various stakeholders and communities in various areas and towns. These include Izingolweni, Hammarsdale and Pietermaritzburg. The campaign will continue to other areas.
