North West Government celebrates Provincial Heritage Day, 29 Sept

Bokone Bophirima Provincial Government in partnership with the North West Development Cooperation (NWDC) and Mmabana Sport, Arts and Culture Foundation invite members of the community to a celebration of Heritage Day and the Launch of the Mahika Mahikeng Cultural Festival Logo on September 29 at Lotlamoreng Dam, Mahikeng.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating Human Treasures by asserting our African Identity”. Heritage Day is about honouring and celebrating our Living Human Treasures from various disciplines such as heritage, museology, indigenous knowledge systems, storytelling, knowledge of the natural environment and many other aspects of life. The purpose of the event is to popularise heritage activities and enhance cultural tourism.

Amongst other things, the event seeks to celebrate our living heritage, popularise the use of living heritage as a vehicle for nation building, promote reconciliation, moral regeneration, economic development and social cohesion.

This is in line with the strategy of the fifth (5th) Administration of the Province to Rebrand, Reposition and Renew the Province by prioritizing on Agriculture, Culture and Tourism. The Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs (CATA) plays pivotal role in embarking on cultural projects which include hosting events, festivals, commemorations and promotion of local artists.

The Department of Culture, Arts and Traditional Affairs held build-up programmes every weekend since September 3rd with the aim of promoting the Mahika Mahikeng Cultural Festival and SATMA Nominees.

The celebration on September 30th, will also serve as a vehicle to promote and assist gathering of votes for Bokone Bophirima Artists who have been nominated for the 2016 SATMA Awards, namely, Thagamoso, Diragammu, Segarona, Kopano-ke-Maatla, Nomtiti, MmaAusi, Fifi Cooper, Chomza and Chevula.
