Human Rights Day is a national day that is commemorated annually on 21st March to remind South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in South Africa. Since 1960, this year marks the 56 anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre where apartheid police opened fire and killed 69 people at Sharpeville while 180 were wounded during a peaceful protest against the Pass laws.

In his State of the Nation Address, the President of the Republic of South Africa said that there is a need to confront the demon of racism and that Human Rights day will be commemorated as the national day against racism. He added that it will be used to lay the foundation for a long-term programme of building a non-racial society.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will be in attendance, as the institution established to support constitutional democracy. SAHRC is committed to promote, respect for, observance of and protection of human rights for everyone without fear or favour.
