Limpopo kick starts project to support farm school with sanitary towels, 15 Mar

Limpopo First Lady, Maggie Mathabatha will launch a project to support girls with sanitary towels at Moshia Secondary School Alma farm, Vaalwater, Modimolle.  Moshia Secondary School is targeted to receive sanitary towels on a quarterly basis. This is made possible by Limpopo Office of the Premier employees who voluntarily made contributions towards purchasing of the sanitary towels.

The officials manage to buy at least thirteen (13) boxes of which a box contains nine (9) packs of sanitary towels. Last in June, nine (9) boxes were donated to Helen Frans Special School as part of Youth Month Programme courtesy of Office of the Premier staff.

This is a Corporate Social Responsibility made by the officials towards needy farm school girls and it will ensure that girls put in more of their time on education. It was done on the fact that sanitary towels are not a luxury but a necessity and that their education is their future. Hence the key message imparting in their minds is “Our education, our future”.

Stakeholders such as Department of Education, Health (Primary Health Care), Social Development, Waterberg District and Modimolle local municipality are invited to this important programme.

According to statistics, everyday thousands of teenage girls in rural South Africa miss out on their education due to monthly period.  Their Education is hindered by twenty-five percent (25%), as girls do not go to school whilst they are on periods as they have no access to sanitary wear.

That is one week in every month, which is a massive set back in their school careers. Hence the towels to farm schools are very key in ensuring that school girls don’t miss out on education.

This visit will also make certain that learners are motivated and encouraged to take care of themselves. "We want them to use this sanitary towels and at the same time they should abstain from sex and focus on their education. It's not a secret that our government went all out to ensure that there is a HIV free generation in the country", said First Lady, Maggie Mathabatha.

"We can't shy away from the fact the HIV and Aids has claimed many lives world-wide and has left families without parents. It's equally imperative that as we encourage children on education matters, they be warned of the damage this pandemic can cause to their lives", said Limpopo First Lady.

Amongst the dignitaries to grace the occasion are the Executive Mayor of Waterberg District Municipality, Cllr Rosina Mogotlane and Mayor of Modimolle local Municipality, Cllr Kgaretja Lekalakala.
