Labour Ministry welcomes appointment of Mdwaba as the Global Employer Spokesperson of the International Organisation of Employers for the International Labour Organisation

South Africa’s Labour Ministry and Department of Labour welcome the appointment of Mthunzi Mdwaba as the Global Employer Spokesperson of the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) for the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
 
Mdwaba was appointed at the international forum by consensus at its Management Board meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland on the evening of Thursday (23rd March 2017).
 
The ILO celebrates its centenary in 2019 and Mthunzi is the first African Employer Spokesperson in its history.

With workers and employers from the same countries making up its membership, the ILO is a United Nations (UN) multilateral agency based in Geneva, Switzerland, dealing with the world of work. It has over 187 member states and is the only tripartite organisation in the world. South Africa is a founder member of the ILO which was formed in 1919.

Mthunzi, who is currently the Vice President of the IOE for Africa, assumes his role in June 2017. The IOE is the largest private sector employer organisation representing same in over 155 countries.
 
The Deputy Minister welcomed Mdwaba’s appointment as great news for the country.
 
“As the Ministry and Department of Labour we are delighted to have one of our own holding such an important position in the international world of work purely on the basis of merit. Mr Mdwaba's elevation to the position attests to the long-held view that South Africa is on the right path in the promotion of the all-important principle of Social Dialogue.

We are ready to give all the support he will need,” Holomisa said.
 
“I am very honoured and humbled to serve and see this as Africa’s victory and look forward to serving the world, assisted by an amazing team”, Mdwaba said
 
Mdwaba is an entrepreneur and current chairperson of Productivity SA, an entity of Department of Labour. He is also chairperson of the University of the Western Cape, has previously been one of the Vice Presidents of Business Unity South Africa. Mthunzi, a very keen cyclist also serves/has served in a number of boards and is an acclaimed speaker at local and international events.
