Kouga housing beneficiaries to receive title deeds
Over 300 housing beneficiaries in Thornhill Lourie under Kouga Local municipality will receive title deeds of their houses from Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Helen Sauls-August on Friday, 8 July 2016. A total of 310 title deeds will be given to beneficiaries tomorrow. A further 660 title deeds for Hankey (550) and Nomzamo (110) has been verified and is ready for issuing on a later date.
The Provincial department will give away 8 000 title deeds to correct beneficiaries of government’s low cost subsidy programme this financial year. Between the year 2011 and 2016, the department transferred title deeds to about over 35 000 beneficiaries. A title deed provides security of tenure. Government has prioritised the issuing of title deeds to beneficiaries.
The department is prioritising the issuing of title deeds so that beneficiaries can legally own their properties, particularly the previously disadvantaged families also who were deprived right of home ownership by apartheid regime.
Before title deeds are issued out to beneficiaries, the department has to conduct verification to ensure that title deeds are given to correct beneficiaries. Beneficiaries without title deeds are at the risk of losing their houses due to malpractices that bedevil housing allocation to beneficiaries.
This legal document (title) will also prevent illegal sales of government subsidy, robbing people of their homes. Many beneficiaries have lost their homes due to the unavailability of title deed that confirms home ownership.
The MEC will also unveil a contractor to the Pelsrus community who will start building of 500 homes in the area. The contractor will work on sewer connections, water and building of houses.
