Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, 4 and 5 Dec

4 to 5 December 2015

South Africa as co-chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) will host the Johannesburg Summit of FOCAC in Johannesburg from 4 to 5 December 2015 under the theme: “Africa-China Progressing Together: Win-Win Cooperation for Common Development”.

South Africa assumed the co-chairship of FOCAC at the conclusion of the Fifth Ministerial Conference in 2012. South Africa took over from Egypt, on behalf of the African side, until 2018 and is therefore the host of this year’s meeting.

The summit will be preceded by 11th Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) on 2 December 2015, followed by the Sixth Ministerial Meeting of FOCAC on 3 December 2015.  A new Declaration and Plan of Action (2016 – 2018) will be the outcomes of the Summit.

The Ministerial Forum is a scheduled event of the FOCAC process, whereas the Summit is an extra-ordinary activity that can only be convened with the consent of all members of the forum. During the 10th SOM of FOCAC, which was held in South Africa from 9 – 10 December 2014, it was recommended that a summit be convened.

The historic event will be hosted on the African continent for the first time since its inception in 2000 as a multilateral platform for exchange and cooperation between China and African countries. It covers various aspects of politics, trade, economy, society and culture.

FOCAC aims to strengthen consultation and expand cooperation within a pragmatic framework. It also promotes political dialogue and economic cooperation with a view to seeking mutual reinforcement and cooperation.

It is expected that African heads of state and government, representatives from the African Union, heads of regional organisations and multilateral organisations will participate in the summit. A new Declaration and Plan of Action (2016 – 2018) will be the outcomes of the summit.
