Gauteng Health on alleged food poisoning at Tholulwazi School in Ekurhuleni

Investigations underway on the cause of food poisoning at a school in Ekurhuleni

The Gauteng Department of Health would like to confirm that eighty two pupils from Tholulwazi Secondary School in Ekurhuleni were this morning treated at Pholosong Hospital after suspected food poisoning outbreak.

The learners from different grades of the school were brought at the hospital around 9h30 this morning after complaining of stomach aches and diarrhoea. According to teachers, these learners ate samp with brown beans, cabbage and butternut from the school’s feeding scheme the previous day.

The hospital is currently treating some learners while others have since been discharged. To date; no learners have been admitted at the hospital.

The infection control team from the hospital visited the school this morning and samples of the consumed food were collected and sent for testing at the National Health Laboratory Services. Results will be released in due course.
