MEC Paul Mashatile condemns violent interruption of council sitting in Tshwane

Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs condemns the violent interruption of the Council Sitting in Tshwane earlier today. The behaviour of councillors is both unacceptable and embarrassing. Such behaviour is not consistent with our stated commitment for tolerance and good governance.

The conduct that has been portrayed in the media is a serious indictment against those who were elected to carry the hopes of the voters who are now betraying that trust. This behaviour is an affront to the recent successful local government elections.

We call on the conscience of the public representatives who are abusing public trust and the confidence our people have in the institutions of government, to exercise maximum restraint and to display maturity in managing differences.

The department will constitute a high level team led by HOD Nhlakanipho Nkontwana to meet the city’s Mayor, Speaker and Whips of all parties to prepare for a visit by MEC Paul Mashatile in the afternoon.
