Basic Education celebrates International Literacy Day in Ntabankulu, 8 Sept

The Department of Basic Education in partnership with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Eastern Cape English Educators Association will on Thursday 8 September 2016 celebrate International Literacy Day at the Methodist Church in Ntabankulu, Eastern Cape.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day and UNESCO is celebrating it under the banner “Reading the Past, Writing the Future”. UNESCO officially proclaimed 8 September International Literacy Day to actively mobilise the international community and to promote literacy as an instrument to empower individuals, communities and societies.

The Department of Basic Education launched the Read to Lead Campaign in 2015 to put national focus on improving the reading abilities of all South Africans. The Campaign seeks to provide energy, as well as direction and inspiration across all levels of the education system, in homes and the public domain.
