Minister Nathi Mthethwa hosts an Imbizo with the youth of Jozini to build a better South Africa through the arts

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, will host youth Imbizo to engage with the community of Jozini and surrounding areas within UMkhanyakude District Municipality, Richards Bay, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Imbizo will engage with the problems youth face in the area and how through arts, culture and heritage they can create opportunities for themselves, celebrate their African identity and contribute to local, national and continental culture. The engagement will also serve as an important platform in providing an interactive space in which the youth can voice their concerns.

The National Development Plan requires a youth that will play their part in shaping an inclusive South Africa wherein there is sustainable social, cultural and economic development.

“The youth of today are the leaders of the future and arts and culture can play a pivotal role in enabling youth to make a positive contribution in changing their lives and the lives of others for the better. Jozini can become a shining light through increased participation in the arts,” said Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

The Department of Arts and Culture launched the Young Patriots Programme in November last year in partnership with the NYDA and this Imbizo with youth will share information on this programme and others, including incubators, art at schools the Living Legends Legacy Programme and funding opportunities such as the Debut Fund that can foster youth development.

This will enable young people who are interested in pursuing careers in the arts to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves.
