Gauteng Government mourns the passing of Rueben Khemese
Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Faith Mazibuko, has learnt with sadness of the sudden passing of Soweto String Quartet legend Rueben Khemese, who passed away this morning after collapsing.
“I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the legendary musician from a well-known group Soweto String Quartet. He and Soweto String Quartet touched the lives of many South Africans and across the borders with their music. He and the group touched the lives of many indigenous music lovers in South Africa and abroad since their formation in 1978, were Reuben played a Cello instrument”.
“We’ve lost a great artist, musician, a leader in the music industry. We hope we can still have the group producing the kind of music we have come to be known and recognized for by the world. He will be greatly missed. On behalf of the entire Gauteng government and its people, we’d like to express our sincerest sympathies to the family, members of the group and all loved ones. May his soul rest in peace and his legacy continue to be an inspiration for the nation,” said the MEC.
Rueben Khemese’s last performance was at the ‘Thank You SABC Music Concert’ at Orlando Stadium on 10 September 2016.
