Gauteng defends the South African Schools Winter Games Championship in style
Team Gauteng came out guns blazing and easily brushed aside other eight provinces to retain the South African Schools Winter Games Championship in style with a gap over 30 points to their nearest rivals Western Cape. The four day tournament took place as from Monday, 10 July 2017 till Thursday, 13 July 2017 at several sports facilities in and around Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal.
Team Gauteng scored 68 points, which was were made out of a total of 28 medals (14 Gold, 12 Silver and 2 Bronze). Gauteng teams received medals in 7 of the 9 codes including gold in Chess, Football, Jukskei, Kho Kho, Netball, Tennis and Volleyball.
Kho Kho boys after coming short last year changed the tables and outshined everyone this time around by winning all their 8 eight games. The Jukskei team also performed very by taking 4 gold medals and 1 silver.
Further stand out achievements for Gauteng include teams with leaners with special educational needs, ranging from wheelchair tennis, mildly mentally handicapped netball and volleyball and football teams together with the deaf netball and volleyball, winning 7 gold medals and 3 silver medals.
Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko congratulated the winning team for their efforts in placing Gauteng as the Home Of Champions and retaining the title.
“Congratulations to team Gauteng on defending the title, we want to commend not only for your excellence but in making sure that school sports lives. We are not only proud for their achievements as a team but for their contribution in sport and ensuring that the title remains within Gauteng-‘The Home of Champions”, she said.
“It is from here that we’ll be able to bring transformation and much needed support to school sport in large and continue to build future champions”. It is a great honour to be able to shine a light on those who are the future of sport in the province and beyond.
The school sport programme will continue to produce, nurture recognize upcoming young talented sportsman and woman from the different communities across the Gauteng City Region and produce champions, she concluded.
