Freedom Park commemorates International Day of Monuments and Sites, 18 Apr

Freedom Park will on the 18th of April 2016 join the Department of Basic Education, the City of Tshwane and Lucas Moripe Foundation to commemorate and raise awareness about the International Day for Monuments and Sites.

The International Council on Monument and Sites (ICOMOS) was enshrined in 1964 in order to lead for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places which was endorsed by UNESCO. Consequently, ICOMOS releases a theme annually to celebrate this significant day in the heritage sector calendar.

The 18th of April is a day which finds its purpose of having a reflexive ambience of cultural heritage worldwide. Furthermore, sport has been a strong activity which has successfully aligned itself towards nation building and gives a platform for all cultural diversity to partake in.

The rationale comes in handy with the realisation that Lucas Moripe stadium was renamed behind one of the historic prominent soccer stars named Mr. Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe or known to others as “the god of football”

It is expected that school learners will be the key target group for this event. They will be afforded an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of the world heritage and efforts required to protect it. Consequently, Freedom Park has identified 10 local schools to conduct presentations through speech and poetry.

Grade 12 learners from Edward Phatudi , Holy Trinity, David Hellen Peta, Dr Nkomo, Flavious Mareka, Hofmeyer, Phelindaba and Lotus Garden secondary schools will participate in the event. They will be expected to demonstrate the role of cultural heritage institutions and how to conserve them. They will also be afforded a platform of interpreting their own knowledge using contemporary methods.

Details of the event are as follows:
