Parliament conducts oversight visits at Alfred Nzo District Municipality, 17 to 21 Oct

Fifth Parliament strengthens the taking Parliament to the people programme

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Legislature and the National Assembly (NA) Portfolio Committee on Basic Education will on 17 – 21 October 2016 conduct oversight visits and public meetings at the Alfred Nzo District Municipality as part of the Taking Parliament to the People Programme.

The Taking Parliament to the People programme was launched in 2002 as a programme of the NCOP. The part of the programme from 17th to the 21st October will focus mainly on overseeing the delivery of quality education to the people of Alfred Nzo District Municipality.

The cooperation between Parliament and the EC Legislature is an indication that the components of the Legislative Sector are beginning to work together towards a coordinated, results and impact driven oversight.

The programmme will also encompass the elements of public education on the role of the Legislative Sector in strengthening democracy. It will also give an opportunity to the ordinary citizens to engage face-to-face with their elected public representatives on issues affecting them.

As part of the facilitation of public involvement in the processes of the Legislative Sector, the programme will culminate in public hearings in Matatiele (Maluti Community Hall), Mbizana (Ndunge Methodist Church) and Mount Ayliff where members of the public will raise matters affecting them particularly on education.
