Eastern Cape Human Settlements hands over Multi-Purpose Community Centre Engcobo, 15 Oct

Multi-million rand facility to benefit Engcobo villagers

The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements will officially handover a newly built multi-million rand Multi-Purpose Community Centre (MPCC,) to the community of Deberha in Engcobo Local Municipality, on 15 October 2016.

MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August and Engcobo Mayor, Councillor Lizeka Tyali will open the facility for community use. The total cost of the centre is R22 918 000.

The state of the art MPCC has a multi-purpose hall for basketball, volleyball, table tennis, indoor soccer and stage for performing arts, meeting rooms, offices and a crèche. The facility also boasts of large external sports fields, tuck-shop, banking facilities, Library as well as office space for sector departments. Local teams will try out the new sports amenities where they will go head to head in an exciting sports tournament on the day.

This facility will service about seven villages in Engcobo and surrounding areas bringing much needed services to this impoverished area as well as offering recreational space for the youth.

While the Department of Human Settlements receives a budget primarily for housing delivery, it has become more imperative that the houses are part of a community and that community requires social amenities in its development. Therefore, the MPCC serves as a cornerstone facility to generate social togetherness and community life, becoming a catalyst for further development through other state institutions, the private sector and also the community itself.

The media is invited to the handover of the facility which will be held as follows:
