Police arrest Empangeni robbery suspect

Yesterday, Empangeni police and Empangeni K9 Unit acted swiftly to the robbery that had occurred near one of the banks at the CBD and arrested a 36-year-old suspect. The suspect was arrested by police while driving in a getaway vehicle at Esikhaleni, minutes after the incident. The suspect will be charged for car hijacking and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He will appear at Empangeni Magistrates’ Court soon.

At about 13h30, a male was confronted by four unknown males after exiting the bank soon after withdrawing an undisclosed amount of cash in one of the banks. The suspects allegedly stabbed the man while taking the money and his vehicle. They sped off, leaving the profusely bleeding victim at the scene. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition. Police were swiftly alerted and a pursuit followed. The victim’s vehicle was recovered few kilometres from the scene. Police investigation revealed that the suspects had abandoned the victim’s vehicle and got into a VW Polo which drove towards Esikhaleni and they proceeded to the area. The vehicle was spotted with one occupant then he was searched and apprehended. Victim’s belongings were not recovered and the search for three outstanding suspects is continuing.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended police on swiftly attending to the robbery which led to the arrest of one of the suspects. “We are certain that the outstanding suspects will be arrested soon,” he said
