Minister Angie Motshekga hosts Education excellence awards, 1 Apr

Education excellence awards set to acknowledge the nation’s best districts and school nutrition food handlers

Access to quality education for all South Africa’s children is largely dependent on the efforts of the individuals leading the nation’s schools, individuals that continue to give their all to ensure that schools deliver the best quality possible. At the centre of this drive are districts that are not only well led but are fully committed to fulfilling their commitments to the betterment of South Africa’s Education System.

Through the National Education Excellence Awards the department seeks to acknowledge and celebrate these districts at a breakfast to be held on 1 April 2016 at the Presidential Guesthouse in Pretoria.

The 2016 National Education Excellence Awards will not only reward the excellence made by Districts in the National Senior Certificate examinations but will also reward excellence in the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) which through its efforts feeds in excess of 9,2 Million learners on a daily basis.

As key pillars in education the role of the NSNP in fostering the perfect learning and teaching environment are second to none, the department has continued to ensure that no child of school going age is denied the right to education. As one of the greatest achievements of the department, the NSNP on a daily basis continues to ensure that more than 75% of public school learners receive a balanced meal daily helping learners better concentrate and perform at school.

In 2013 the Minister of Basic Education initiated the Education District Awards to celebrate excellence in district operations linked to improved learning outcomes. The introduction of the District Awards has to a large extent energised districts across the country that have in turn re-energised and reinvigorated many districts to improve on a daily basis.

The 2016 Education Excellence Awards focus on both districts and schools and serve to complement the National Teaching Awards.

While recognising the commitment, hard work and efforts of districts and schools in improving learning outcome, the National Education Excellence Awards are geared at ensuring all sectors of districts are elevated and that in turn all learners receive quality education, while also serving to motivate all SA’s districts and schools to continue doing their best to improving the quality of education in the entire system.
