Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga empowers inmates at Barberton Correctional Centre, 31 Jul

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga will extend the Department of Transport’s Career and Skills Development Programme to offenders at the Barberton Correctional Centre in Barberton, Mpumalanga on Monday, 31 July 2017.

Transport department established a Skills and Career Development programme aimed at assisting in eradicating poverty and inequality in South Africa.

Through the programme, the department is currently funding 11 transport tertiary educational institutions providing transport related qualifications with the objective to support scarce and critical skills required within the sector.

Deputy Minister Chikunga also aims to orientate South African youth especially from previously disadvantaged communities about study, bursary and job opportunities available through the initiative in the sector.

The Deputy Minister is extending the career exhibition to inmates in one of the correctional facilities that holds a large number of juveniles in Mpumalanga. The career exhibition will be opened to all the inmates, especially the student offenders to serve as part of their rehabilitation. 

Some of South Africa’s top soccer legends will participate in a tournament that will take place after the exhibition and formal programme.
