Deputy Minister Letsatsi-Duba participates in the United Public Service Forum 2017  The Hague – Netherlands

Governments across the globe are challenged to embrace innovation in response to the increased complexities the public service faces and in fast-tracking the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The idea of shaping government through the heightened use of innovation is amongst the issues under discussion at the United Nations Public Service Forum 2017 which is hosted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, from 22 to 23 June 2017 in The Hague, Netherlands.

The Public Service Forum which takes place in observance of the United Nations Public Service Day under the theme “The Future is now: Accelerating Public Service Innovation for Agenda 2030” places emphasis on job creation and prosperity, and unblocking the potential of the furthest behind.

The goal of the Forum is to contribute to developing the capacity of governments to anticipate the various challenges posed by the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and respond in innovative ways, drawing from the strategies different countries are implementing.

Leading the South African delegation which includes the executive of the Centre for Public Service Innovation (CPSI), Deputy Minister for the Public Service and Administration Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba shared the country’s experiences in getting the voices of the most marginalised to be heard. The Deputy Minister spoke about how the South African government used the public participatory Imbizo programme to engage the most remote and marginalised citizens, assessing their situation first-hand and also engaging the affected demographic on the best approach by government to respond to their service delivery related and developmental challenges.

Deputy Minister Letsatsi-Duba will on the second day of the Forum also participate in a Ministerial conversation, “From the Hague onwards: How do we accelerate innovations in public service” which focuses on the measures to make governance and public institutions more effective, inclusive and accountable.

The recurring theme in the deliberations of the Forum has been on the need to leverage more on public service innovation as a catalyst for governments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and for the various countries to adopt an approach that places more emphasis on outcomes, including economic inclusion.
