Deputy Minister Dikobe Ben Martins to address the DPE and Safcol Forestry Industrialisation Roundtable

Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises, Dikobe Ben Martins will deliver remarks at the Department of Public Enterprises and SAFCOL Forestry Industrialisation round-table at the Royal Elephant & Conference in Centurion tomorrow (Tuesday).

Through its operations SAFCOL employs about 5 000 people through direct and indirect employment. The company impacts the lives of about 20 000 people in communities adjacent its operations.

The Forestry Industrialisation round-table aims to bring forestry decision-makers together from public and private sectors, forestry technical practitioners, end-product users, forest managers, academics and researchers, to determine the current status of the industry, opportunities to be exploited and alignment to international developments. This interaction will facilitate networking to develop joint projects and activities that will address priority issues.

The South African forestry sector’s limited use of wood products has triggered a need for a discussion to promote a wood culture society. A need to have a diverse forestry sector has been identified by both the Department and SAFCOL.

The round-table discussions will seek consensus on projects that stakeholders can jointly undertake to increase value addition in forestry.
