Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries celebrates South African Agriculture graduates, 30 Jun

Celebrating Home-Grown Heroes, Growing SA’s #Agristars of the Future

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, General Bheki Cele invites you to come celebrate our own home-grown #Agristars under the theme “Stars under the African stars.’’ The event is intended to showcase excellence and exceptional achievement of a cadre of young graduates, young entrepreneurs and producers in agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

In 2015, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) developed a Strategy on Developing Young Producers and Entrepreneurs. The Strategy attempts to advance the thrusts of National Youth Policy 2020, also responding to the NDP as mentioned by the President during the SoNA, contributing to the GDP, food security and job creation.

This Strategy aims at supporting the establishment of youth owned and/or managed enterprises, youth entrepreneurs and also encouraging active participation of youth in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors in order to bridge the gap of aging producers, while reducing youth unemployment and poverty.

DAFF has been supporting young people with requisite skills in agriculture, forestry and fisheries areas for the past 12 years to date with beneficiaries of 1 119 young people.

The day will unfold in two segments. A Morning Live broadcast at Phetogo Farm located in Kameeldrift West, Pretoria, will take place. The selected poultry farm, covering an extent of 13 ha, is owned by Mr Tumi Mokwena and has been in operation for ten years.

The farm is currently operating at 122 000 chickens per cycle. Later that day, a gala dinner will be held with graduates as the Deputy Minister’s guests where #Agristars recognition awards will be awarded to six young people for excellence in the three sectors.
