Electoral Commission holds municipality by-elections

Six municipal ward by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng and Mpumalanga on Wednesday, 19 August 2015.

The by-elections are being contested by 12 candidates representing 4 political parties. One ward is uncontested.

One by-election will take place in the Eastern Cape:

Ward 30 in the Nelson Mandela Bay [Port Elizabeth] Municipality – NMA will be contested by Sizakele Lawrence Mnqamisa of the African National Congress; Eric Jinikwe of the Democratic Alliance; and Mandla Louis Faltein of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 58.77%.

Two by-elections will take place in the Free State:

Ward 14 in the Maluti a Phofung [Qwa-Qwa] Municipality – FS194 will be contested by Matsebetsebe Amos Mhlambi of the African National Congress; and Kganyane Daniel Ramasilo of the Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 52.98%.

Ward 8 in the Mantsopa [Ladybrand] Municipality – FS196 will be contested by Lefa Petrus Moletsane of the African National Congress; and Dewald Jacobus Hattingh of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 54.20%.

One by-election will take place in Gauteng:

 Ward 55 in the Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] Municipality – TSH will be contested by Letlape Martins Molobi of the African National Congress; and Frederik Wilhelmus van Wyk of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 63.19%.

Two ward councillors are being elected in Mpumalanga:

Ward 3 in the Pixley Ka Seme [Volksrust] Municipality – MP304 is uncontested. Teboho Victor Hlakutse of the African National Congress is the only candidate. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 2011 municipal elections was 53.23%.

Ward 17 in the Mbombela [Nelspruit] Municipality – MP322 will be contested by Wilna Naomi de Beer of the African National Congress; and Stanley van der Merwe of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor.

The voter turnout for this ward in the 24 April 2013 by-election was 63.33%.

Voting stations will be open from 7h00 to 21h00. A total of 44 356 voters were registered in the 29 voting districts where by-elections are scheduled.
