Parliament on accountability and compliance to Auditor-General findings

Busy week for Police Committee as it seeks accountability and compliance to AG findings

The Portfolio Committee on Police will not compromise on accountability and compliance with financial controls and financial legislation when it scrutinises this week the annual reports of the Department of Police, the Directorate for Priority Crimes and Investigations (DPCI), the Civilian Secretariat, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA).

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, Mr Francois Beukman, said that the Committee will focus on the performance of the institutions with special emphasis on financial compliance and findings of the Auditor-General.

"The Auditor-General is a Chapter Nine institution and departments should ensure that the necessary management interventions are made to avoid negative findings. We will specifically focus on repeat findings and steps taken by accounting officers to address the matters raised by the Auditor-General,” Mr Beukman said.

“It is critical that the departments achieve their set targets and comply with legislative requirements. The Committee will evaluate compliance to legislative and management prescripts. In cases of non-compliance, the Committee will recommend appropriate steps,” he said.

Mr Beukman said service delivery outcomes should talk to the targets set in the annual performance plans.

The Committee also invited research institutions, trade unions and civil society to give input on Tuesday morning on the departments’ annual reports. SAPS top management will appear before the Committee on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, with the DPCI also appearing on Wednesday. The Civilian Secretariat and IPID will appear on Thursday, and the week will conclude with PSIRA on Friday.
