North West on newly built Breaking New Ground houses

Department restores dignity of Boikhutso residents through housing

The Bokone Bophirima provincial government’s mission of changing the lives of ordinary residents in different communities through provision of decent housing continues. This became evident when Premier Supra Mahumapelo handed over a newly built Breaking New Ground (BNG) house to Motshwaiwa family in Boikhutso village near Ventersdorp in NW405 local municipality.

Premier Supra Mahumapelo who was accompanied by MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements Galaletsang Gaolaolwe, other MEC’s and Mayors, was also in the area to officially hand over the Setsokotsane Operation Centre to the community.

Motshaiwa’s house was part of the 800 BNG housing units spread across the erstwhile Ventersdorp local municipality and the project is worth R103 million. 300 housing units have been allocated to Boikhutso village while 500 other units have been allocated to Tsetse and Welgewonden villages.

Premier Mahumapelo said the handing over of the houses is part of delivering in their constitutional obligation of providing housing, security and comfort to all. “We have committed as government that we are through housing development we will change their lives and restore their dignity.

This woman has been staying in a shack for years but now that is the thing of the past”, remarked Mahumapelo.

Gloria Motshwaiwa has been living in a dilapidated shack for 7 years with her daughter. Their shack was reduced to ashes recently and they had to stay with her mother. She was speechless after receiving the key to her new home.

“I’ve never thought that one day I’ll own such a house. I’m no longer going to worry much about strong winds and when it rains, thanks to the caring government”, said Motshwaiwa.

MEC Galaletsang Gaolaolwe said her department is trying hard to reduce the housing backlog in the area. “Out the 300 houses that are being build in Boikhutso, 261 units have been completed and are occupied by rightful beneficiaries. We are hopeful that in the next few weeks the remaining houses will be completed so that we can change the lives of other residents as well”, concluded MEC Gaolaolwe.
