Road Traffic Management on Benoni driving school instructor corruption charges

Benoni driving school instructor in court on corruption charges

A Benoni driving school instructor has appeared in the Benoni magistrate’s court in connection with the fraudulent issuing of driver’s licences by the Benoni testing station.

Mr Doctor Nkosi of Magwabane Driving School was arrested by the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit and the Hawks on Thursday. He appeared in court on Friday (27 January 2017) and his case has been postponed to 03 February 2017 for bail application.

Nkosi is expected to join 13 other suspects who were arrested at the Benoni testing station and in Secunda in October last year in connection with the fraudulent issuing of driver’s licences. The 13 also appeared in court yesterday and their case was postponed to 30 March. More arrests are expected regarding this case.

The case involves syndicate of runners and licensing officers who collude to issue fraudulent licences. This syndicate is believed to operate in Gauteng, the Free State and Mpumalanga. The arrest of the 13 caused a stir last year when it disrupted an October Transport Month visit to the Benoni testing station by the Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters.

The government has prioritised investigations into corrupt practices at driving testing stations in efforts to improve safety on our roads.
