Premier David Makhura congratulates Nomfundo Tshabalala for winning Batho Pele award

Gauteng Treasury wins big at Batho Pele awards

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, has congratulated the Gauteng Treasury Head of Department, Nomfundo Tshabalala, for being recognised as the best Head of Department in the country.

Tshabalala received the award at the 4th Batho Pele Awards last night, 11 November 2016.

The National Batho Pele Excellence Awards are hosted annually by the national Department of Public Service and Administration to acknowledge and reward excellence in the public service.

“We welcome the recognition of our HOD as being the best in the country. This bears testament to our effort to inculcate values of accountability and responsiveness in our work. We also aim to ensure that we discharge our responsibilities with the greatest levels of efficiency, probity, and prudence”, said Premier Makhura.

Tshabalala, an Accounting and Economics graduate, has been an accounting officer for 10 years in the Gauteng Provincial Government.

She also holds a Master of Science degree in Development Finance from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Last night she was recognised for her leadership skills, ability to build and lead a coherent team, and maintaining ethics at all times. Tshabalala commissioned an independent company to conduct an ethics survey in the Gauteng Treasury environment. The survey, conducted by Ethics South Africa, found that the Gauteng Treasury was ethical and professional.

The department holds workshops to promote ethical practice weekly. The department also introduced an open tender system to ensure ethical behaviour, openness and transparency.

“We have set for ourselves the goal of being a transparent, activist government that meets the demand for a cleaner administration. We want to increase public confidence in the merit of the public service in Gauteng,” Premier Makhura said. He added that it was the responsibility of all public servants in Gauteng to put the interests of the citizens at the centre of their work, in the true spirit of Batho Pele, putting people first.

Gauteng Treasury also won Silver Medals in the categories: the best functioning Department, as well as the most ethical and professional provincial department in the country.

The Gauteng Department of education, a previous winner in the Batho Pele awards, also won an Innovation Award for ICT in Education at the Centre for Public service Innovation last month.

“We continue to work hard to improve performance in the public service to meet the needs of the people of Gauteng”, said Premier Makhura.
