Basic Education and Umalusi hosts DialogueSA to discuss value of National Senior Certificate, 27 Feb

The National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Umalusi are hosting DialogueSA to discuss the real value of the National Senior Certificate (NSC)

On Monday 27 February 2017, the NECT, the DBE and Umalusi will host a dialogue to discuss the true ‘’currency’ and value of a National Senior Certificate (NSC).

Media and public commentary on the 2016 NSC results have reflected two concerns, which this dialogue intends to focus on. The first relates to the “currency” of the National Senior Certificate, especially in the eyes of employers and academia, who are being asked to recognise and “redeem” the value of the NSC.

Whether in terms of the bigger picture (“do these results reflect the realities of our schools?”), or more detailed critiques about the standardisation processes of Umalusi (“how many subjects were adjusted upward or downward”), questions have been asked and comments made about the NSC. The second concern relates to the participation of “progressed” learners in the examination. The results of these candidates in 2016 has fed valuable information into debates about the merits of the policy, but have also been accused of skewing the NSC results in some provinces.

This Dialogue will amongst other topics touch on these key questions and perceptions and look at what was done differently in 2016 as opposed to in the past.

Members of the Media are invited to attend the dialogue and will be granted interview opportunities as follows:
