Arts and Culture hosts colloquium on Building a Better Africa and a Better World in celebration of Africa Month, 27 May

Arts and Culture continues with the colloquia programme in celebration of Africa Month

The Department of Arts and Culture will host a colloquium on Building a Better Africa and a Better World at the Durban University of Technology on the 27th Of May 2017. The colloquium is part of series of colloquia conducted by the department around the country. A panel comprising of leading minds in the country and the continent such as Prof Horace Campbell from Syracuse University in the USA and also the Kwame Nkrumah Institute in Ghana, Prof Pitika Ntuli; Odia Ofeimun from Nigeria; Prof Muxe Nkondo and Mathabo Kunene will participate.

"This year’s Africa Month celebrations is a Festival of Ideas in which we have invited eminent thinkers from the rest of Africa and the Diaspora to join us in conversations about the continent and focus particularly on decolonisation." Said Minister Mthethwa.

Africa Month is celebrated under the theme, “The Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a Better World” to celebrate the legacy of OR Tambo and to promote African Unity. At the core of the colloquia programme discussions “Conversations with the continent” is the fundamental debate on decolonization, given the lingering legacy of colonialism and apartheid, as well as the subject of radical socio-economic and cultural transformation. Other discussions have already taken place in North West University, Luthuli Museum, KZN and at the Centre for the Book in Cape Town.

Other events  are scheduled as follows:

1) 30 May 2017: War Museum, Bloemfontein. Roundtable discussion on Pan-Africanism: AU Agenda 2063: Rise Africa Rise - Prof Kole Omotoso, Prof Horace Campbell; Odia Ofeimun, Adv Sipho Manthula.

2) 31 May 2017: Soshanguve, Pretoria.  Readings on Creative Africa 1: - Frelimo Mnisi, Nathalia Molebatsi; Dr Don Mattera; Dr Wally Serote; Odia Ofeimun; Prof Kole Omotoso. 

3) 06-09 June 2017: Little Theatre, Unisa, Pretoria and at the University of Venda respectively: Roundtable and lecture with Prof Ngugi Wa Thiong'o

4) 13 & 14 June 2017: Hillbrow Theatre, Joburg Theatre and Soweto Theatre: Keynote Lecture by Claudia Rankine: Black Lives Matter and readings - Claudia Rankine; Mandla Langa; Raks Seakhoa
