Gauteng Health commemorates African Traditional Medicine Week, 31 Aug

As part of forging partnership with traditional health practitioners and promoting steps undertaken by government towards the official recognition of African Traditional Medicine, the Gauteng Department of Health will celebrate African Traditional Medicine Week.

The week, which starts on Monday 22 to Wednesday 31 August 2016 will see government officials and traditional healers throughout the province carrying out joint activities such as exhibitions, debate, symposia, seminars, panel discussions and cultural shows to raise awareness on traditional medicine.

Under the theme: Regulation of Traditional Medicine Products in the African Region, the aim of the commemoration is to mobilise political commitment in institutionalization of African Traditional Medicine into primary health care system, ensure wide circulation of and publicity of the national law on traditional medicine and lastly, implement African action plan in integrating traditional medicine into primary health care system. This follows a decision made by the then Organisation of African Union (OAU) currently African Union (AU) in 2001 to integrate African Traditional Medicine within the health system.

The Gauteng Department of Health together with about 500 traditional healers from around the province will this week commemorate African Traditional Medicine Day.
