Premier Willies Mchunu announces plans to mark 50th anniversary of Inkosi Albert Luthuli

50th Anniversary of the mysterious death of Inkosi Albert Luthuli and other events to ensure social cohesion

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu has announced that the provincial Government planned to unveil a series of activities marking the 50th Anniversary of the mysterious death of former ANC President, and first recipient of Nobel Peace Prize Inkosi Albert Luthuli. 

Mchunu presented a eulogy during the special provincial funeral of the late Cde Kay Moonsamy at Clare Estate Crematorium.

Mchunu explained: “President Jacob Zuma in 2015 conferred on Cde Kay the Order of Inkosi Albert Luthuli for his outstanding contribution to the fight for democracy and freedom in South Africa.”

“It is important to note that Cde Kay’s passed away few weeks before the month of July which marks the 50th anniversary of the mysterious death on a train track of Inkosi Albert Luthuli. This year there are other significant events in the in the history of the struggle for freedom and democracy in South Africa.”

“The events included the 40th anniversary of the death of Steve Biko, the sinking of the SS Mendi which resulted in the death of 616 South Africans.  This anniversary was celebrated here in Durban months ago and it showcased the country’s defence force .”

“In addition, we are also commemorating the 40th anniversary of the banning of The World and Weekend newspapers. The 70th anniversary of the Doctors Pact. And more importantly, the former President of the ANC O.R Tambo would have turned 100 this year.

“As the provincial government we will stage all inclusive events to commemorate these important events in our history. We want to use them to unite our people across all racial lines as part of ensuring Social Cohesion.  This is the best tribute we can give to Cde Kay.”

“We will remember him as a community activist, a seasoned politician and a fearless debater.  His debating skills made many of our leaders in government and civil society to remain vigilant and not forget that they carry the hopes and aspirations of the people of this beautiful country.”

“As we mourn his passing away, his teachings must inspire us to go the extra mile in fulfilling the vision of KwaZulu-Natal characterized by prosperity, peace and compassion.”
