Gauteng Legislature sends Youth Day commemoration message

16 June commemoration message by Gauteng Provincial Legislature Honourable Speaker: Ntombi Mekgwe

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) community joins compatriots from all corners of South Africa in honouring the youth of 1976. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the historic June 1976 Soweto Uprising when students united in fighting against an oppressive education system; and thus earned their rightful place as Apartheid struggle icons.

As we recognize and honour sacrifices of the youth of 1976, it is important to reflect on strides the country has made in achieving equal education for all whilst acknowledging certain challenges. The tribune of the people GPL, pledges to continue creating public participation platforms for youth to engage and partner on socio-economic and political initiatives.

The Hon. Speaker: Ntombi Mekgwe; urges every individual, organization and community to ensure the struggle and sacrifices of the 1976 youth was not in vain. The same courage of the 1976 generation is needed in uniting as a province and as a country to continue empowering today’s youth and building a better life for all. Today’s youth have a responsibility to ensure they play their part in shaping a better world by taking their rightful place as this country’s future leaders.

GPL wishes everyone a happy Youth Day.
