“Pray for end of drugs and substance abuse”, Mahumapelo urges churches
North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has called on churches in the province to continuously pray for communities, especially young people, to stop using drugs and substances such as alcohol.
Speaking on Sunday at the Unathi Christian Fellowship Church Service in Robega village, Rustenburg Local Municipality, Premier Mahumapelo said drugs and substance abuse is worrying as it is taking a tremendous toll on our society at many levels.
“We need churches to lead in praying for the abuse of drugs and substance abuse in our province.
We will not have a normal society if we are going to continue keeping quiet about the effects of drugs and substance abuse in our everyday life,” he said.
Premier Mahumapelo and Members of Executive Council earlier this year resolved to regularly attend services of different churches in the province.
“As the fifth Administration, we believe in putting the Almighty first in resolving the challenges facing us”.
Mahumapelo’s address was also responding to the reported murder of media personality Hope Zinde, whose body was found in the boot of her car in Hartbeespoort on Saturday. Police later arrested her 28-year-old son, who was also found in possession of drugs.
Premier Mahumapelo reiterated the importance of supporting the work of the police, maintaining that the police alone will not win the fight against criminal acts which are fuelled by drugs and substance abuse.
“We need to be united as a society to fight the scourge of drug abuse because our youth think they are untouchable after using these drugs. Let us pray hard for our youth. They must know that using drugs is not an alternative to the challenges they face daily,” Mahumapelo pleaded.
Church Bishop Duma Sithole who prayed for Premier and the leadership of the province during the service, commended Premier Mahumapelo for his good and exemplary leadership.
“We do recognise the good work you are doing as the Premier of this province. It is good that you are recognising and supporting churches, because by doing this, God will always give you guidance and this province will be prosperous,” he said.
We will continue to pray for you and the province especially the social ills you have mentioned of drugs and substance abuse; we agree it is a huge challenge, said Bishop Sithole.
