South African Police Service (SAPS) constable commits suicide to evade arrest by Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD)

A constable based at SAPS Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal who was a suspect in an investigation conducted by the Independent Complaints Directorate has committed suicide.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, 31 March 2010 afternoon at Ulundi police barracks. The deceased (and four other SAPS officers), was a suspect in the alleged murder and kidnapping of Mr Lungani Biyela. Mr Biyela was allegedly shot by police officers on 29 May 2009 after allegedly pulling a gun on them while they were following up information relating to their investigation.

The ICD had made arrangements that the five SAPS members who were to be arrested be disarmed but it seems that the information regarding the pending arrest was leaked to the suspects.
