Human Rights Commission hosts roundtable discussion on equality and racism, 27 Mar

The South African Human Rights Commission hosts a roundtable discussion on Equality, Racism

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) invites members of the media to a roundtable dialogue focusing on Equality to be held in Kliptown, Soweto.

The dialogue will provide an opportunity to critically reflect on how the Commission has implemented its constitutional and legislative mandate over the past twenty years focusing on Racism and hate Speech, Sexual Orientation and Homophobia and the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination.

The main objective of the dialogue is to engage in a critical analysis and assessment of progress made by the Democratic Government since the advent of democracy in the Republic.

It is concerning to the Commission that racism complaints continue to top the list of complaints received by the Commission every month.

The Dialogue will further help identify the challenges and obstacles that hamper and slow down progress in addressing issues of equality.

We are hoping the Dialogue will help suggest and provide possible solutions to deal with the challenges as identified going forward.

Details of the dialogue are as follows:
Date: 27 March 2014
Time: 09h00 – 16h45
Venue: Soweto Hotel, Kliptown, Soweto, Johannesburg

SAHRC Chairperson Adv. Lawrence Mushwana will address the dialogue, Deputy-Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mr John Jeffery and Minister of Arts and Culture Mr Paul Mashatile. Other speakers include CRL Commission Chairperson, representatives from various government departments, Civil Society Organisations and Non Government Organization (NGOS).
