Renaming of the Limpopo-Shashe Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA)

The Ministers of Environment and Tourism of Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe will rename the Limpopo-Shashe Transfrontier Conservation Area on Friday, 19 June 2009, at the Mapungubwe National Park in Limpopo. The renaming event will involve Tourism Ministers of the nine Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries that are party to the TFCA development strategy for 2010 and beyond as well as the executive secretary of SADC. The nine countries include Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Limpopo Shashe TFCA was established in 2006 through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Environment and Tourism Ministers of three countries. A Tri-lateral Technical Committee and other working groups were established to facilitate the planning phase of the TFCA. The MoU was signed at the confluence of the Limpopo and the Shashe rivers, at a point where the three countries meet, hence the provisional name Limpopo-Shashe TFCA.

The Ministers will also meet with the Boundless Southern Africa Expedition team during its fourth leg of the 10 000 km trip. The objective of the expedition, which was launched on 11 May at the National Tourism Indaba in Durban, is to raise awareness about TFCAs and promote tourism and investment opportunities in these areas. The expedition has so far concluded the visit to the Maloti-Drakensberg TFCA between Lesotho and South Africa and is now in Lubombo TFCA shared by Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland.

Media is invited to the event and will also have the opportunity to join the expedition team on the fourth leg of the expedition at the Limpopo- Shashe TFCA in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, 17 June 2009.
