Premier Mokonyane pays tribute to former President Nelson Mandela

It was with great sadness that South Africans learnt of the passing of tata Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela the founding father of democratic South Africa.

The former president; anti-apartheid activist and global icon died peacefully at his Johannesburg home on Thursday 5 December.

He battled several health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection which led to numerous hospitalizations.

On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government and the residents of Gauteng we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Graca Machel and the Mandela family.

We thank you for having shared your husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather with us. Madiba leaves us as we are on the brink of celebrating 20 years of democracy and freedom, a celebration which would not have been possible without his sacrifices.

While we are saddened by his passing we will continue to celebrate our freedom and his legacy

Hamba Kahle Madiba
