Opening of new Somerset hospital's Emergency Centre

On Thursday, 29 April 2010, the Western Cape Department of Health and the provincial MEC Theuns Botha will launch new Somerset hospital's Emergency Centre. The event will take place on the hospital grounds and will be officially opened by the Premier of the Western Cape, Ms Helen Zille.

As a designated hospital for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the department felt it necessary to upgrade the old Emergency Centre. Government has put over R25 million into the renovation and rebuilding of the new centre and the business community sponsored an additional R8.5 million for medical equipment including a CT scanner, as well as modern soft furnishings to make it more comfortable for patients and staff.

"With 85 percent of South Africans using state health facilities, we welcome the new Emergency Centre. This unit is of international standard, as well as of great benefit to our community for years after the world cup."
