Colleagues, ladies and gentlemen

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you one and all to this media briefing, presented by the National Joints Operational and Intelligence Structure.

Just like most of you, I am an invited guest here today so it is indeed a privilege to be able to share a few words before the proceedings begin.

I would like to congratulate the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on having put together a very comprehensive security plan in a relatively short period of time. Only having been advised in May 2012 that South Africa will take over the hosting duties for the 29th Africa Cup of Nations, this structure immediately swung into action and called up all the relevant key stakeholders.

As a result, today we have thousands of personnel from dozens of departments actively on duty throughout five provinces, all eagerly awaiting the opening match between Bafana Bafana and Cape Verde on Saturday evening.

The integrated approach used by the NATJOINTS and their counterparts in the provinces is a shining example how all South Africans should pull together in harmony to achieve our common goals. This structure really operates like a well-oiled machine, each entity working in sync with the next towards a common goal – peace, safety and stability.

The next month is going to be hard work for our collective employees, with long hours and major decisions being made on a regular basis. We, your Directors General and CEO’s from the public and private sectors, are here to support you every step of the way. Good luck and God speed to each of you. Viva Bafana Bafana viva!

General Riah Phiyega
