National Council of Provinces (NCOP) Week 13 – 16 September 2011

The Provincial Week under the theme “Parliament in Action - advancing citizen involvement in addressing service delivery challenges in our communities, is designed to give permanent delegates to the NCOP and Legislatures an opportunity to undertake oversight visits and interact with communities in order to get “first hand” information on the delivery of services. They also visit projects that are implemented by both national and provincial government.

NCOP Provincial Week, 13 - 16 September 2011 will commence in earnest with a briefing by the Hon. Premier of Gauteng Ms, Nomvula Mokonyane and her Political Task Team on “Acid Mine Drainage and Environmental Management” and plans to mitigate the challenges confronting Gauteng. The role of NCOP in promoting the province’s interest and perspective will also be covered during these discussions.

This meeting is scheduled to convene as follows:

Venue: Auditorium at Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Cnr Loveday and President Street.

The NCOP has taken a decision to play a meaningful role in guiding the delivery of services to the people. It has committed itself to driving the initiative to encourage provinces and municipalities to develop Service Delivery Implementation Plans that are informed by the needs of the people and serve as a measure for monitoring progress in the delivery of services.

The initiative for provinces and municipalities to develop Service Delivery Implementation Plans, is intended is also intended to highlight and develop necessary interventions to deal with capacity constraints in the delivery of quality services to communities. This initiative is intended to ensure an Activist Parliament that plays an integral role in giving voice to the issues confronting communities and ensure that service delivery plans, programmes and mechanisms are informed by the real conditions and needs of the people.

This September provincial week will concentrate on the areas that were previously visited by the NCOP and Provincial delegates as part of the Taking Parliament to the People, Provincial Week, committee visits and sittings of the NCOP and provincial legislatures with the purpose of ascertaining progress made with regards to issues that were raised by communities.
