Minister Mthethwa confirms investigations into R2,2 million robbery and R112 million riot control gear contract

The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa today confirmed to Parliament that he has launched two, yet separate investigations. One pertains to Crime Intelligence officers who were robbed of R2,2 million last month and the other relates to whether a R112 million contract was awarded by South African Police Service (SAPS) without going to tender.

He made these confirmations in a Parliamentary reply with reference into whether the R112 million contract for providing riot control gear during the 2010 FIFA World Cup had been put out to tender; if not, why not; if so what were the relevant details?

“I am currently engaging with National Treasury regarding this specific contract and matters related to it. Once this engagement is completed, I will report back to Parliament regarding this particular tender and steps, if necessary, that need to be taken regarding this contract,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Minister Mthethwa further announced an immediate criminal investigation to a report that Crime Intelligence officers were robbed of R2,2 million in Johannesburg last month. The investigation will look on amongst others: why was the money drawn and not transferred electronically, why did the crime intelligence officers have the money in their possession and why were they not adequately guarded?

“The robbery and circumstances surrounding it are currently under investigation which unfortunately cannot be further elaborated on due to the matter being under investigation. We shall therefore afford all sides to present their cases without fear or favour but the bottom line is that, we must get full explanation as to what happened, why did it happen and what should have been done to avoid such an occurrence?” he pointed out.

“As we have indicated in the past, no member of the SAPS is beyond reproach when it comes to administering the public finances, no matter the amount.  I expect sound management, accountability, professionalism and excellence at all times, whether it be administration of funds or managing a police station.  I therefore want to assure Parliament and society in general that we shall get to the bottom of this and ensure that satisfactory answers and if needs be those who are implicated, are accordingly charged and punished,” stated the Minister.
