Members of the community

Theme: “Make everyday a Mandela Day: Contributing 67 minutes of our time to help those in need”.

Every year on 18 July South Africans and the international community honour former president and international icon the late Nelson Mandela through the Nelson Mandela International Day.

This month our country is commemorating South Africa’s first democratically elected President.

Tata played a special role in the development of the Freedom Charter. The year 2015, marks the 60th Anniversary of the Freedom Charter. The Freedom Charter is an important piece of policy document which captures the aspirations of many South Africans on the kind of country they would want to see in the future. The Freedom Charter laid the foundation for the development and adoption of our progressive Constitution we have in the country.

During Mandela’s month last year, I was here at the Evuxakeni Hospital as part of the engagement with key strategic partners, stakeholders and the community around here.

During my visit last year, I expressed the desire to return to the Evuxakeni Hospital on Mandela month 2015 to assess progress in area, but also to support patients and the local community. Several challenges were raised during my first visit, and I’m happy to report back and say some of challenges that were reported have been resolved.

Nelson Mandela once said: “It looks impossible until it’s done”.

We as the South African government, have no doubt that, the country’s  citizen and youth present an enormous opportunity to help drive innovations that are critical to driving socioeconomic growth and development necessary to change the lives of the people of this country.

His excellence, President Jacob Zuma during his state of the nation address in February this year he said says the economy needs a major push and has listed a 9-point plan to meet the annual target of 1 million job.

The department of communication has been hard at work ensure that the 9-point plan becomes a reality.

South Africa’s move towards digital broadcasting will bring more benefits for broadcasters, independent producer, television viewers, community-based stations and publications.

We will soon start rolling out a digital terrestrial television (DTT) awareness campaign.

Keep checking your local community newspapers and main stream media for possible opportunities for those who want to be distributors and accredited installers for set-top-boxes.

And for aspiring film and documentary producers, the move from digital to analogue present an economic opportunity as many television channels will be available, and requiring local content. Our history as black people need to be told by us, not foreign film-makers. African stories by African people.

“It looks impossible until it’s done”, said Nelson Mandela.

Let us use this Month to actively encourage greater Social Cohesion and Nation Building, while also fostering African unity. South Africa is as an integral part of the African Continent. Together we can build a better South Africa and a better Africa.

“It looks impossible until it’s done”, said Nelson Mandela.

I thank you.
