MEC Siboniso Duma: Christmas and End-of-Year message

Christmas and End-of-Year message delivered by the Leader of Government Business & MEC Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs, Siboniso Duma at Sitting of KwaZulu-Natal Legislature

Madam Speaker and Honourable Members,
I rise with a high level of appreciation om behalf of the governing party, the African National Congress.
We are wrapping up what has been the most challenging but yet fulfilling  year.

As the majority party, we pause to salute honourable members for their valuable contribution towards the deepening of our freedom and democracy.
The oversight role you played excellently from the beginning of the year until today was not only the fulfilment of your responsibilities as elected public representatives.

But, you also practically advanced the aspirations of the people of this province.Honourable Members, we should therefore view this day as tribute to all of you as members of this house.Future generations will look back at 2023 and marvel your ability to engage robustly on issues of service delivery.
Future generations will check history books and celebrate your ability to pay attention to detail as you played an oversight role over the executive.

Future generations will learn about Taking Legislature to the People Sitting in which you demonstrated to communities that under the ANC we had an activist legislature.
Future generations will salute you for ensuring that as honourable members  you respected this house and its rules.

They will salute you for the respect you accorded to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker despite the fact that you represented different political parties.
Indeed, the building of a strong, efficient, accountable and responsive state is a responsibility we dare not delegate to future generations. This is the task that our history has entrusted us with.

As we wrap up the year, I wish to personally salute you Honourable Members.
Equally, as the majority party we wish to express our appreciation to all categories of staff in the public service and KZN legislature for their dedication to serve the people of KwaZulu-Natal.

Without the public servants’ dedication we would not have been able to meet the aspirations of our people.

As demonstrated by Stats SA in the Quarterly Survey report, KZN is the leading province in terms of job creation and restoration of the dignity of the most vulnerable and marginalised socially and economically.

Honourable members, as we travelled throughout the corners of this province, we met with ordinary members of society.

As the governing party, we remain grateful for the enriching experiences that the people of KwaZulu-Natal and leaders of society shared with us this year.

We have no doubt that we will come back in 2024 stronger and even better.

We must come back and do everything possible to serve the national vision of a democratic, united, non-racial, non-sexist, just and prosperous society.

Ours is a critical task of renewing the hopes of our people; to build together a province that provides for itself.

Critically, as we start the festive season, together let’s make this province a more peaceful and the one that cares for its people.
