Yawa vows to root out corruption involving learners and driving licences

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa, says that 73 applicants have until tomorrow (Friday, 5 March 2010) to respond to allegations that learners licences in their possession were fraudulently issued last year at the Rustenburg Driving Licence Testing Centre (DTLC).

The licence scam involving a cashier employed by Rustenburg Local Municipality was discovered by the Management representative of the centre in August 2009. The investigation into the alleged scam was concluded by the provincial inspectorate in December.

Failure by the applicants to respond to letters written to them by the provincial department will automatically cancel their learners and driving licences obtained thereafter.

As part of its intensified effort to root out corruption relating to fraudulent issuing of learners and driving licences, MEC Yawa's department has recently suspended six examiners at Koster (one), Hartbeesfontein (one), Carletonville (two) and Fochville (two) DTLCs.

Two of the officials suspended as examiners are employed by Merafong Local Municipality as management representatives. "We'll spare no effort to root out corrupt elements in order to safeguard the integrity of our licensing system," vows Yawa.
