Yawa confirms tight security for Royal Bafokeng International Rugby game

Intensified crime prevention and traffic law enforcement operations are to be stepped up around Rustenburg as from Friday ahead of the British Lion and South Africa’s Highveld XV Rugby International match to be played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

"An iron curtain of tight security as part of our zero tolerance against crime, unruly fans and spectators will be maintained throughout Rustenburg, at Park n Ride venues, in Phokeng and at the stadium venue.

This major event is a dress rehearsal towards hosting incident and accident free Confederation Cup and Fifa 2010 World Cup games at the stadium." North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa highlighted after an on the ground briefing and inspection of the match venue on Thursday.

"We have in line with our safety and security master plan put in place the necessary infrastructure, joint operations command structures, contingency plans, procedures and deployed adequate and professionally competent personnel for a safe sporting event," MEC Yawa emphasised.

To avoid congestion of traffic on the road leading to the stadium, the area in front of the stadium has been declared a traffic free zone. Free transport, i.e.85 busses and 85 minibuses have been arranged to transport spectators to and from the stadium from the following Park n Ride areas:

  • Olympia Park Stadium (in Rustenburg)
    : Lenatong / Bobuanja
  • Shaft No 8 Mines
  • Roman Catholic Church (Phokeng)
  • N4 Donkerhoek

Motorists are urged not to park at random for the safety of their cars but utilise Park n Ride areas as cars parked outside of these facilities will be towed and impounded.

Only accredited vehicles will be allowed into the Western Parking of the Stadium to access the Park n Walk facility reserved for VIP’s.

"We call on fans and spectators not bring prohibited items to the stadium. We also wish to make a passionate plea to motorists to cooperate with the police and traffic law enforcers at roadblocks, remote search park and traffic control centres leading into Rustenburg and Phokeng for a safe, enjoyable sporting event and visit to our province," Yawa appealed.
